Josh Gullery (Clark 2017-2021) has been crowned the Waikato regional winner of the Master Builders Apprentice of the Year 2025, establishing himself as one of the region’s most promising young carpenters. Representing JCC Build, Josh’s achievement highlights both his technical skill and professional dedication, earning him a place in the national finals in Auckland.

When Josh finished his schooling at St Paul’s Collegiate School in 2021, he was unsure of his next step. He decided against university, drawn instead to an apprenticeship where he could earn while learning. Following in his father’s footsteps, who had built and run his own construction business, Josh had early exposure to building, helping out on projects as a child – including building a treehouse.

It proved to be a good decision. Josh’s practical skills, work ethic and commitment to the industry matched the criteria for the winning apprentice. His time at St Paul’s played a major role in shaping his leadership and work ethic. Josh served as School Prefect and Head of Clark House and was a key member of the Rugby First XV team in Years 12 and 13. He was always on the lookout for opportunities to further develop his leadership and captaincy skills. 

Mentors and teachers at St Paul’s, including Mr Chris Foot and Mr Neil Muirhead, alongside supportive peers, were key influences in helping Josh develop confidence, leadership skills, and a collaborative mindset. He is appreciative of the continued connection with St Paul’s as a Collegian and the ongoing support, especially from the matrons. 

In the 2025 Apprentice of the Year regional competition, Josh impressed judges with both skill and professionalism. Judges were equally impressed by his project submissions and confident presentation during site visits and interviews. “It was a whirlwind of emotion,” Josh recalls. “Hard work is paying off, and I am so grateful for everyone’s support. It was a team effort, I couldn’t have done it on my own.” His project for the nationals – a new build from start to finish – is his first as site foreman.

Josh thrives on creating projects that delight clients, particularly those with visible progress. “Coming to the site isn’t just a job – it’s a lifestyle. It’s ingrained in me. It’s not about making money, it’s about improving, seeing change, and having fun,” he says.

Looking ahead, Josh hopes to advance toward a project manager or quantity surveyor role, eventually becoming a director of his own company and supporting Waikato’s residential construction sector. His advice to aspiring apprentices: “Give it a go! There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
