'Mary Hornsby Music School'
1977
Chalk and oil pastel on canson paper
Gary had only recently finished as a student at St Paul's when he was commissioned by the school for an original piece of art. Music classes were a highlight of Gary's time at St Paul's which was the motivation for the subject of the piece, the Mary Hornsby Music School. Gary remembers labouring over the bricks and the trunk of the tree for light and shade when. He ensured that the Chapel, with its unique architecture, was featured in the background. The challenge for this piece was to find a large enough piece of Canson paper to use the chalk and oil pastel on such a large scale. The work was so easy to smudge that it had to be protected behind glass when framed.
