'HR Hornsby Bust'
1983
Bronze Bust
Gary Schofield (Collegian, Hall House, 1970 - 1974) was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He won his first National Art Competition at the age of eight years. His paintings hang in some of the most prestigious locations around the United States including Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon. In 2016 Gary was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services as an artist and to New Zealand–United States relations.
Gary visited his headmaster, Reg Hornsby Headmaster (1963 - 1969), when Reg was in hospital in Nelson during his final days. Gary offered to honour the headmaster by creating the bronze bust. Gary gifted this piece of art to St Paul's Collegiate School.
A fine likeness, the bust stood in the old Hornsby Library until 2019. It now sits in the new Hornsby Library within the Lander Centre.
The bust is mounted on a plinth made by teacher Vic Matthews (1964 - 1984) from oak grown on the original Great Oaks Farm (now St Paul's Collegiate School).
Location: Lander Centre (Hamilton Campus)
