Ida Carey (1891–1980) was a pioneering New Zealand artist who spent most of her working career in Hamilton. She was a teacher at St Paul’s (Staff 1961–1963). In 1934, Ida was instrumental in initiating the formation of the Waikato Arts Society. Ida is often remembered for the numerous late-career portraits she painted of Maaori women with moko.

The old man and his books reflect Ida Carey’s strength in portraiture, for which she became widely recognised.

Purchased from Aesthete Gallery in Hamilton, New Zealand. Certified as an original from the gallery and/or Fine Art Society. This work is kindly on permanent loan from the Whetu Whaanau.
