'Honeycomb Sculpture'
2018
Corten Steel
It has been a long-standing tradition at St Paul's that the Year 13 students donate a gift to the school in recognition of their time at the school.
In 2018 the chosen leaver's gift was a honeycomb-themed sculpture created by artist James Wright based in Clevedon, Auckland.
The honeycomb theme represents St Paul's mascot, the bee. It also represents agribusiness in the school, which holds a particular significance for the 2018 leavers, as many in this year group were amongst the first students to trial the agribusiness programme.
The sections of Honeycomb also fit together nicely which represents the school-wide goals of unity in all aspects of school life. It represents the strength of many people as a whole, a structure that would not occur if the hexagons were on their own, and that we all have a part to play in something so big. The interpretation of this piece is really up to the viewer and what it means to them.
