Mouth Painting on canvas

John Laughnan was a Hamilton-based artist who painted using his mouth after a spinal injury in 1986 left him paralysed. A former New Zealand water ski champion, John took up painting years after the accident, drawing inspiration from his artist mother and the landscapes of Aotearoa.

Entirely self-taught, his work, often capturing scenes like Arrowtown, Mount Pirongia, and rural life, has earned him recognition and a scholarship from the international Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA).

John’s paintings have been exhibited, featured in the Fine Homes Tour, and sold for several thousand dollars.

John is a Collegian of St Paul’s Collegiate School (School 1971–1974).
