Te Korokoro O Te Paratu - Reuben Paterson

'TE KOROKORO Ō TE PARATU'

2022

Arcylic on board

Reuben Paterson (Ngati Rangitihi, Ngāi Tūhoe, Tūhourangi) graduated from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts in 1997. Following graduation Reuben was one of three artists awarded a six-week residency in France as part of the prestigious Moet & Chandon Art Fellowship. Combining modernist traditions of pattern and form with the contemporary material of glitter, Reuben is acknowledged as a member of a third generation of contemporary Māori artists defining their own modes and methods of art making.

These works interlace kōwhaiwhai of the mangōpare hammerhead shark and the mangōtipi white pointer shark. Woven together as genealogical markers, the two kōwhaiwhai act as invocation and whakapapa to Tangaroa, god of the sea.

Reuben consults extensively with his iwi when creating his works. Through his research, where the whirlpool was discussed in reference to Te Arawa, Reuben chose the language used historically through his iwi, feeling this was the most ethically correct and respectful use.
