Waiting - Shannon Yu

'Waiting'

2025

Acrylic on canvas panel

Waiting portrays a young girl—one of millions of “left-behind” children in rural China whose parents have migrated to urban areas in search of work. She waits for their return, her expression holding both hope and quiet sadness. Through her gaze, Shannon Yu aims to capture the loneliness these children experience, as well as their emotional resilience and inner strength.

The painting draws attention to a social issue that remains unresolved, highlighting the emotional impact of separation on children and families. By focusing on a single figure, Waiting personalises a widespread experience, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the human stories behind economic migration.

Shannon is passionate about using art as a way to tell meaningful stories and to explore social and emotional themes. Through painting, she seeks to create work that encourages empathy and awareness, while continuing to develop her own artistic voice.

This work was selected for the Art House Awards at Pah Homestead, where it won second place in the People’s Choice category.
