Terry Stringer is a leading New Zealand sculptor and a significant figure in the nation’s art history.

Born in Cornwall in 1946, he trained at Elam School of Fine Arts, graduating with Honours in 1967. Working mainly in bronze, Stringer’s sculptures often depict figures and still-life forms, reflecting his fascination with classical art and cubist influences.

His public works are landmarks across Aotearoa, including The Risen Christ (Christchurch Cathedral Square), Grand Head (Wellington), Mountain Fountain (Auckland’s Cathedral of the Holy Trinity), The World Grasped (Newmarket), and Dance to the Music of Time (Nelson).

Stringer has exhibited widely in New Zealand and internationally, and his works feature in major public collections such as Te Papa and the Auckland Art Gallery. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council Scholarship four times and was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003 for his contribution to the arts.

This artwork was gifted to St Paul's from Collegian Robert Cox (School | Sargood 1959 - 1962)
