St Paul’s Collegiate School is celebrating the success of Collegians Quinn Harris (Sargood 2022–2025) and Richard Ruetsch (School 2020–2024), who have both been selected for the New Zealand U21 squad.

Quinn and Richard will take part in the 2026–27 New Zealand U21 programme, which includes an extended squad camp in July, before the team turns its attention to the Junior World Cup Qualifier in October.

Their selections follow an outstanding campaign with the Mavericks men’s team in the 2026 Junior Hockey League (JHL). The JHL is New Zealand Hockey’s premier U21 competition, bringing together the country’s top emerging players to compete for regional franchises. The Mavericks franchise represents the North Island from Taranaki to Thames.

The Mavericks went unbeaten throughout the tournament, scoring 16 goals across the week before securing the title with a 4–2 victory over the Falcons in the grand final. Richard was recognised for his exceptional performances in goal, earning the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.

The St Paul’s connection extended beyond the playing group, with Mavericks men’s coach Ben Tanner (Hamilton 2004–2007) also a Collegian. Ben played an important role in guiding the side through an outstanding and unbeaten tournament.

Further adding to the celebrations, Collegian Matthew Ruetsch (School House 2018–2022) has recently been named in the New Zealand Men’s Black Sticks squad for the upcoming FIH Nations Cup in Cape Town, South Africa. Matthew’s selection is another proud achievement and reflects the growing impact St Paul’s Collegians are making at the highest levels of hockey, both nationally and internationally.
