Jim and Sue van der Poel honoured

Jim and Sue recently received the prestigious Services to the Dairy Industry Award, a rare honour that recognises their incredible 40-year contribution to New Zealand agriculture.

Every school community relies on incredible people who show up, step up, and give back. Two people who embody this spirit are St Paul’s grandparents, Jim and Sue van der Poel. Whether they are cheering loudly from the sidelines for Kees and Braxton, supporting the school from behind the scenes, or leading the nation's agricultural sector, Jim and Sue are the definition of true "St Paul’s Good Sorts."

Jim and Sue were recently recognised on the national stage at the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards in Rotorua. In a wonderful surprise, Jim and Sue were called to the stage to receive the prestigious Services to the Dairy Industry Award, a rare honour that recognises their incredible 40-year contribution to New Zealand agriculture. From winning the Waikato Sharemilker of the Year back in 1987 to Jim serving in governance roles, including as a Fonterra Director and Chair of DairyNZ, they have been a pillar of the farming world. Alongside him every step of the way has been Sue, a highly successful farmer and business partner in her own right. Award Trust Chair Paulette Johns praised Jim’s "cool, calm, and pragmatic approach," noting that his commitment to mentorship represents a legacy of service to New Zealand agriculture.

Jim and Sue’s belief in mentorship, succession, and supporting the next generation isn't confined to farming; it extends to St Paul’s as well. Jim and Sue have taken their commitment to youth development to the next level by becoming official sponsors of the St Paul’s Basketball Programme. Their generous sponsorship ensures that our players have the resources and gear they need to hit the court with confidence.

A massive congratulations to Jim and Sue on their well-deserved national award.
