Shirley, the wife of a local farmer, was integral to the foundation of Tihoi’s kitchen—a place as critical as any classroom or outdoor trail. She worked tirelessly to ensure that the growing boys of Tihoi were not only well-fed but also cared for. Known as "pint-sized but with the heart of an elephant," Shirley brought unmatched energy and love to her role.

In partnership with her fellow kitchen staff, Ngaire Albert and Lesley Hawkins, Shirley set high standards from the very beginning. She helped establish a kitchen that became the heart of the Tihoi experience. Together, they prepared hearty mid-day meals, organised breakfast and dinner, and ensured that no boy ever left the dining hall hungry. Seconds and thirds were always available, and complaints about the meals were unheard of.

Shirley’s connection to the boys went far beyond the meals she prepared. She had a soft spot for the "mischievous ones," often lending them a listening ear. Many boys would confide in her with a simple, "Mrs. S, I’m in trouble again." The stories of Shirley’s time at Tihoi are as warm as the meals she served. Judy Shaw remembers Shirley darning the boys' socks—a small act of care that spoke volumes. Even years after the boys' time at Tihoi, some of the boys maintained correspondence with her, a testament to the impact she had on their lives.

Shirley found joy in the growth and resilience of the students. She had a sharp eye for character and a knack for inspiring both respect and admiration from everyone she encountered. She will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of working alongside her and by the many boys whose lives she touched.
