Honouring John Lloyd

The epitome of a successful secondary teacher: John Lloyd (staff 1974 - 1994).

A favourite teacher, John Lloyd, has passed away. He served our community with dedication and will be greatly missed. Originally from England, John made his way to New Zealand in the early 1970s after receiving a letter from Headmaster HR Hornsby, inviting him to help shape a young, struggling Anglican school in Hamilton. Mr Hornsby had taught John in England where John had been the captain of the King's School First XI.

Despite the school's modest beginnings, John saw promise in St Paul’s, a decision that led to two decades of profound impact through his teaching.

As a geography teacher, department head, and housemaster of Williams House (1978-1986), John was known for his warm guidance, which inspired countless young minds and built a lasting community. Both he and his wife, Cynthia Lloyd, were integral parts of the Williams House community creating a happy atmosphere in the house.

It was on the cricket field that his legacy truly flourished. As the First XI coach and in charge of cricket (1974-1982). During a time when St Paul’s had little in the way of sporting facilities, John’s ingenuity and vision transformed the school’s approach to cricket. His fundraising efforts and resourceful strategies, including his famed negotiation for free black netting from a Whakatane mill, were pivotal in establishing St Paul’s first cricket facilities. He also coached First XI Hockey and headed the canoe club. John’s passion for cricket left a lasting impact on his players.

At his retirement, Headmaster Steve Cole spoke of his ‘remarkable input’ to his adopted country: ‘It would be hard to meet a more gentlemanly person ... and he has given to generations of St Paul’s students ... his scholarly approach ... and his unfailing good humour and fund of mostly relevant stories ... Indeed John Lloyd is the epitome of a successful secondary teacher.’'

Even after retiring, John remained a cherished part of the St Paul’s family. He was a familiar face at school events, from Chapel services and concerts to cricket matches, always taking pride in the school’s growth and achievements. John leaves behind a legacy of resilience, passion, and kindness that will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew him.

Our thoughts are with John's children, Jeremy, Emma and Nick, during this time. John has requested a private cremation but correspondence can be sent to the family via St Paul's, Private Bag 3069, Hamilton 3240.
